How to create a ring tone for free using iTunes 10.2.1

It's easy to create ringtones for free with iTunes using the steps outlined below, and then you can upload them to your cell phone with a USB data cable or a Bluetooth connection.

These instructions are for iTunes version 10.2.1 which you can download for free from http://www.apple.com/itunes. With iTunes installed and your music either imported from a CD or downloaded from the iTunes store, here are the steps to create a free ring tone:

1. Configure the iTunes mp3 convertor

Open iTunes and click the Preferences menu (Tools -- Preferences on Windows).

Click Import Settings.

Change the Import Using option to MP3 Encoder.

Click OK to save your changes, and OK one more time to exit the Settings screen.

2. Make an MP3 version of your song

Right-click on the song in iTunes and select Create MP3 Version from the pop-up menu.

This will create a copy of the song and save it in MP3 format.

NOTE: Do not select "Create Ringtone", as this option will charge your account, and also only works with songs you have purchased through the iTunes store.

3. Change the song length to 30 seconds

You should now see a second copy of the song. Right-click on the second copy (the new one) and click Get Info from the popup menu.

Click the Options tab and set the Stop Time to 0:30 for 30 seconds.

Upload the ringtone to your phone using a usb data cable or Bluetooth

Transfer ring tones to a Samsung Instinct

Question: How do I access files on my Samsung Instinct using a USB data cable, or how do I put ring tones on my phone that are on my computer. Also, what folder do i put them in, and what format should the ring tones be in?

Answer: Spring provides a Media Manager program that lets you retrieve, manage, and synchronize your pictures, video and music between your PC and the Samsung Instinct. You'll be able to use Media Manager to transfer ring tones from your PC to your cell phone, and it will automatically put them in the right place.

You can also assign a different ring tone to each of your contacts, so you can give your significant other a special ring tone that lets you know who is calling even before you look at the caller ID (or you could know it's your boss and could send the call to voice mail before accidentally answering it).

1.Update your phone's firmware

The latest version of Media Manager addresses an issue experienced with the inability to activate the application upon first time use. To take advantage of this fix in media manager, you must have the latest version of firmware installed on your Instinct.

You can check to ensure you have the latest firmware installed on your phone by going to Home >> Settings >> General >> Update Software. If you do not have the latest version, you will then be prompted with instructions to upgrade the firmware.

2. Download and install Sprint Media Manager

Once your firmware has been updated, then download the latest version of Sprint Media Manager from the download page:

Note: you'll need to click "More Details" on this page to view the download link.

3. Connect your phone to your PC

How to set a custom ring tone for each contact on a Motorola RAZR

Question: How do I change the ring tone on my RAZR phone, and also how do I set a different ring tone for each of the contacts in my phone (so a different ring tone plays for each person in my address book)?

Answer: Configuring a default ring tone for your Motorola RAZR phone is fairly easy. Just select Menu –> Settings, and then select Ring Styles. Choose the second option, which ends with "Detail", and scroll to select the ring tone that you want.

Assigning a custom ring tone for each individual cell phone contact is a little more involved but still just a few menu clicks.

1. First, you’ll need to enable custom ring tones (referred to as ringer IDs in the Motorola user’s guide) by selecting Menu –> Settings –> Ring Styles –> Style Detail –> Ringer IDs –> On.

2. Next, you’ll assign a custom ring tone for each contact by first selecting the contact (Menu –> Phonebook) . Then, with the contact selected, press Menu –> Edit –> Ringer ID. You’ll see a list of ring tones on your phone, and you can select the one you want to ring when you receive a call from that contact.

This feature is very handy because it lets you know exactly who is calling even before having to look at Caller ID, just by hearing the ring tone that's set for that contact.
